Oblong Ash Bowl
Step by Step, Natural Edge Bowl, Ash, Bark On, 12" x 4.5", 12/2008

Here is a nice oblong bowl being turned on my VB36 bowl lathe. The bottom is being finished on my Powermatic 352B lathe with a Vaccum Chuck. The VB can spin that big chunk of wood with NO rock rattle and roll!

Here is a nice small vase being turned on my VB36 lathe. You can see the crack across the end of the log I turned the vase out of. The VB is not good for just really big stuff. It is also fantastic for small work because you stand directly in front of the spindle and it can easily spin any small blank at any speed you want.

Almost to Big for the Lathe

This bowl was as big as I could go on my old Delta 1642 lathe. The shape is pretty good and it is a nice bowl. But the bowl is pretty much useless. It is to big for fire place mantel, to big for most shelves, etc. I can easily make a bowl this big or a lot bigger on my new VB36 lathe. But, I don't because they are useless. I stay below 12" in diameter.

Step by Step, Small Vase, Canary Wood, 10/2005

This is one of the early small vases I did out of Canary wood using a small set of Ellsworth style holloing tools that I got from Michael Hosulak. The rim is a little to thin but I love the wood!

Step by Step, Low Bowl, Cherry, 03/2004

I turned this bowl out off a hunk of Cherry wood I got a Nutmeg Woodturners club meeting. At the time this low bowl shape was a new experience for me. Belonging to a club is good because it really helps you grow by encouraging you to push your boundaries.

This was a good bowl for me back in 2003. When I look back at it now in 2011 it sucks. The foot is to big and the shape is not a nice flowing shape. Life is a big learning curve and this bowl was part of my learning curve.

When I look back at this photo in 2011 I see that I really have not lost all that much hair lately. :)
